• FINE MOTOR SKILLS
The development of fine motor skills is an important part of your child’s experience in preschool. Children have opportunities to strengthen small muscles in their hands through coloring, painting, manipulating small objects and using scissors. A child’s grasp on writing utensils typically develops between the ages of three to six. A tripod or three finger grasp is a mature, efficient grasp for children to use when learning to write in kindergarten. Allowing your child time to play outdoors to build large muscles is essential to the development of fine motor skills. Recess and movement activities strengthen shoulder and trunk muscles, allowing for good postural control. Having good postural control is essential for participation in seated work in school.
