What is the National Honor Society?
Since 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS) has been working with advisers and principals to recognize students who demonstrate and are committed to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character in school settings. The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
Who is involved?
Doc. Dunn (chapter advisor), and is responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of the chapter, and liaison between the faculty, administration, and members/candidates.
Mr. Crombie approves activities and decisions of our chapter.
The faculty council (5 member faculty board) approves procedures, and selects candidates to be members.
What are the requirements for candidacy?
To be invited to be a NHS candidate, students must be in either their junior or senior year, have attended WHS for a full semester, and have a career GPA of 3.9 or higher.
Candidates are then required to fill out a Candidate Information Form and write an essay. Please see the Candidate Information Form document below. Candidate information forms and essays are reviewed by the faculty council, who votes by majority rule for each candidate's membership.
What if the faculty council does not select me for membership?
You can appeal it! Please see the Pullin Poynte Chapter of the National Honor Society Appeals Process document below.
Once a member, what are the expectations?
Each member of the National Honor Society must:
- Pay $20 in chapter dues annually.
- Complete a 30-hour community service project annually.
- Attend all the meetings and the induction ceremony.
If I'm a junior member, how do I carry my membership from my junior year, to my senior year?
You will be asked not to return as a member after your junior year for your senior year, if you do not;
- Continue to have a career GPA of 3.9 or higher. This is our chapter's common requirement for all members to have.
- Complete your 30-hour service project in your junior year.
- Pay your dues.
- Attend all the meetings and the induction ceremony.
- Facilitate and attend the Withrop High School Undergraduate Awards.
If I'm a senior member, what do I need to do in order to ensure I get my cord for graduation?
- Complete your 30-hour service project in your senior year.
- Pay your dues.
- Attend all the meetings and the induction ceremony.
I want to be an NHS officer. How do I run?
You need to read over the NHS Officer Requirements document below. If you are running opposed for a position you will need to prepare a speech. Our chapter will vote majority rules for officer positions.
